Gold Coast Marathon, July 3 2005

Jake's employer, Breakfree, was organising a team for the Gold Coast Marathon. Jake was going to do it last year but due to his knee playing up he pulled out. This year he was determined to do it and I said I wanted to as well. The walk, mind you, I'm not silly enough to run! ;) So we decided our little family would go in the 7.5km walk together. Jake offered to wear Kira on his back so we wouldn't have to worry about a pram.

The day drew nigh, we went on a few practice walks in preparation, but really, it's only 7.5kms! And a nice flat course to boot. We were a little worried about Kira's nap, and when she woke up at 7am the morning of the marathon, we knew a nap before the walk was impossible. We just hoped she'd fall asleep on Jake's back.

We parked at Australia Fair and got ourselves bibbed up and all in the shopping centre.

Then we loaded Kira onto Jake's back and headed over to wait at the start line with the mass of humanity doing the walk.

Just before the gun sounded Kira fell asleep! So we secured the head rest-thingy (while we were walking mind you) and set off.

She slept for about half an hour, at that point we had done about 2.5kms. That stretch was the hardest, as we had left the broadwater behind and there was no breeze, and it was really hot. We had packed water, but it wasn't enough, so I stupidly rationed myself. Jake was finally warming up so we were walking a bit faster (started off REAL SLOW LOL) and before we knew it we hit the 4km mark and the turn around point, and could see the Broadwater again. And the BREEZE! Beautiful!

We were travelling well, Kira was enjoying herself and every now and then we'd get comments from people who thought she looked so cute on Daddy's back. At about the 6km mark I told Jake I'd beat him across the finish line, and started to walk ahead of them.

Towards the end I decided to push myself a bit, and in the crowd lost sight of Jake and Kira. Then I saw the finish line! YAY!

The time says 1:21:33, I crossed at 1:21:40 or thereabouts. Oh and I have to say I'm impressed at how well the photos all turned out considering I took them all while walking! Heehee. Anyway, crossed the line, cleared the photographers and turned around to wait for Jake. Took a photo as he crossed the line, but the stupid camera switched itself off. So I made him stand and pose.

And Kira of course!

We walked out, collected our medals, and made our way to the Breakfree tent, where they were serving up sausages and salad (lucky me LOL). Kira had a nice big feed and then had a bit of lettuce and promptly puked all over me, yum. Jake was in getting a much-needed calf massage at that point, then I got one too! :D Finally, I decided we needed some record that I actually was there.

And just because she's such a cutey, and was still happy after all the fuss of the day!

It was great fun, and I would definitely do it again!
