2.0 Methodology

An investigation into the relationship between film music and audiation must necessarily take the form of qualitative research. It was determined that in order to prove the existence of audiation within the films, certain parameters for audiation, established by the pilot study, must be adhered to in the analysis of the music. Case studies provided the most logical way of gathering the necessary information, and an audience reception study was also necessary. While ten films were viewed, the two that best fit the criteria (under section 2.4 of this chapter) were analysed and discussed in detail. Due to time and resource constraints, I fulfilled the role of the audience in the reception study (this role included my individual interpretations of how music related to each character, how the music related to each scene, and how stereotypical associations in the music were exploited). The case studies and data analysis (Appendix 7 and Appendix 8 respectively) show how the researcher interpreted the films according to individual and social experience. In addition, a TV/theatre music composer was interviewed to determine professional ideas and assumptions about the existence and function of audiation in film music.
